A tourist in my own city

Last week, the Boy and I spent a Sunday pretending we were tourists in our own city - taking photos and exploring new neighbourhoods. Later that evening, we actually met two tourists, taking their honeymoon in Toronto! This couple was from England (about 2 hours from London) and they had just arrived the night before. We chatted with them for a while before we invited them to join us at our table.

We told them about the film fest, yorkville, chinatown, greek town, centre island, queen street.. It was just so neat talking to two people who were so excited to be here. And they did their homework! They'd planned a visit to Niagara, bought Jays tix to see them play the Yanks (such a coincidence that I'll be going to the same game!), planned a picnic in Centre Island.. the guy has been in town for one day and was already wearing a Leafs cap! Just talking to them made me see our city in a whole new way. It seemed new and exciting. Lately, I've been looking at things differently, and imagining how a tourist from a small town in England would react to it.

I wish I took their email addy, because I would love to have sent them a bunch of restaurant suggestions. I find that when visiting a new city, the hardest thing to do is finding a good restaurant, and not eating at a tourist trap. Sadly, we didn't think to ask. They would've just returned from Niagara today - I hope they found a way to King street tonight. It was hopping at 9pm when we drove by. Tons of people still on patios (enjoying one of the last warm weekends), walking around the street and there were at least 3 film fest parties we drove by. Good night to people watch. There was just this buzz in the air. I love the vibe in our city. The food. The festivals (I just went to one yesterday in a neighbourhood I've never been in - cabbage town).

I've always loved our city, but lately I've just reminded why.
