Last month, I got a letter summoning me to Jury Selection. Apparently, I would be there for 3 days, and during those days, I could be selected for Jury Duty.
I wasn't exactly sure how it worked, but I admit, I did start looking forward to the break. So yesterday, I packed my backpack with my wedding thank you cards, a new book, my ipod, snacks, and my Nintendo DS. I had also gotten all eps of Dexter, Season 3. I was ready!
I was in the Jury room for only 2 hours, playing my DS (Big Brain Academy!) when our entire panel of roughly 100 - 120 people was called down. They explained that a lottery system was used, and only 20 people would be called. From these 20, the lawyers would try to chose 12. If they can't get all 12, then another 20 people are drawn.
Anyway, I wasn't thinking I'd be called, but lo and behold, I was. I was one of the first twenty. And would you believe it, I was the first one they chose!! I'm not just a juror, I'm frickin' Juror Number One. So I'm sitting in the box, fuming. Because I did not want to be picked. I wanted to go back upstairs with everyone else and finish my wedding thank you cards. Plus, the case is due to be in court a week, a week and a half.
So after we're all chosen, and the rest are taken away - the judge tells us that we're taking a lunch break, and the case will start.... RIGHT AFTER LUNCH!! Holy Moly!!
My president told me to tell them I'm too busy at work to take time off. That I have a presentation on Monday (which is true). But I didn't. Because just ahead of me, before I was called up, a woman tried that. And she got reamed. 'It's only one week! Are you telling me you can never take a vacation? What does your company do then? This is your civic duty!'. And she also told one woman who was self employed, 'Self employed people serve jury duty, too!'. Ah, yeah. There was really no point in asking. The only people who got out of it were 2 people with doctor's notes and one guy who was having surgery next week. And a lady who had to watch her young kids at home, but had no family here.
So don't call my office for the next week or so. Instead, email me. Please. Give me something to do/read when we take breaks and stuff!! I know this is my 'duty' and all, but I kinda wish I were at work, instead.

There's a video game called "Call of Duty"... My first thought at the title was "she's playing *that* game?!"
Good luck with the jury duty! Hopefully it finishes early!
Haha we must be such gamer nerds because when I first saw the blog title, I thought the same thing as GJ! :P
Awww sux that they picked you. Do you know what case it is yet? Are they going to keep you from going home during deliberations?
